Richmond author David Helvarg will discuss his latest book at a speakers event at the Richmond Yacht Club. “Forest of the Sea” is Helvarg’s seventh book, focusing on the life and imperiled future of kelp in the oceans. Helvarg is scheduled to speak for 30 to 40 minutes, followed by a question-and-answer session and socializing.

2 | Harvest festival celebrates new community garden, Oct. 3
The Asian Pacific Environmental Network is celebrating the opening of its community garden with a festival. The APEN Harvest Celebration will include tours of the garden, cooking demos, live screen printing and children’s activities. Organizers describe the event as a “low-key, family-friendly gathering to celebrate the garden and our community’s work in Richmond.”

3 | Five female artists explore boundaries and belonging in new exhibit, Oct. 3
An opening reception will celebrate a new exhibit showcasing five local female artists of color. “Border Visions: A Group Show About the East Bay” explores the multifaceted concept of crossing lines — both literal and metaphorical — within the East Bay through paintings, prints and drawings. The works invite viewers to engage with themes of transgression, boundary-crossing and liminal spaces. Visual Artists of Richmond organized the exhibit, which opens Oct. 3 and runs through Jan. 7.

4 | Library workshop lets the sun do the drawing, Oct. 3
The Richmond library is hosting a workshop introducing participants to an historic form of creating photographs. The Cyanotype Sun Prints seminar will let attendees arrange natural objects, such as flowers and leaves, onto an 8.5-by-11-inch cyanotype paper, then expose their creation to the sun to produce an image. Participants can bring their own materials or use those the library supplies.

5 | Love, nature and color collide in new Point Richmond art show, Oct. 4
Oakland-based artist Chamia LaRae is showcasing her latest works at a downtown hangout in Point Richmond. “Bold & Beautiful: A Contemporary Art Exhibit” will be on display through Nov. 15 at Kaleidoscope Coffee & Wine, with an opening reception Oct. 4. LaRae, a multi-disciplinary artist, says her art is “inspired by the many facets of love as evidenced through nature, spirit, and the human experience.”
