1 | Block party helps prep for back to school school, Aug. 14

The Early Childhood Mental Health Program has organized a celebration to get children and families ready to return to school. The 2026 Back to School Block Party will feature donated school supplies, resource, entertainment, music and family-friendly activities. Organizers say it’s a chance to “work together to prepare our youngest learners for a bright school year ahead.” Organizers expect about 300 children and family members to attend.

2 | Point Richmond Music summer concert series continues, Aug. 14

The sounds of Americana and accordion music will fill downtown Point Richmond as the Point Richmond Music summer concert series continues. The lineup will feature CBD with Russell, Kaplan, Patrick + Smith, followed by Those Darn Accordions. The final show is set for Fri., Sept. 11.

3 | Family outdoor movie night features ‘The Goat,’ Aug. 14

The community can gather under the night sky for an outdoor movie night in San Pablo. This latest Movies Under the Stars evening will screen the animated film “The Goat” on an outdoor movie screen. You’re invited to bring chairs, jackets, blankets and favorite snacks.

4 | Richmond Open Studios continues with artist sales at partner venues, Aug. 15-16

Richmond Open Studios is in its final weekend as participating artists sell their work at partner venues citywide. After opening their own studios to the public last week, artists are now showcasing pieces at established art spaces to give their work even more exposure. The Richmond Art Center, the NIAD Art Center, and the Richmond Museum of History and Culture will display works from 22 artists. The remaining artists will showcase their work at six studios across the city.

5 | The Plunge swimming pool celebrates 100 years, Aug. 15

The city of Richmond is hosting a 100th anniversary party for The Plunge, the historic swimming pool still operating in Point Richmond. The daylong celebration will include a building dedication, a demonstration of pool activities and a family recreation swim for $1, which is sold out. (Visit this link to join a waiting list.) A drop-in lap swim will also be available at the regular fee of $7 for Richmond adult residents and $8.75 for adult non-residents.

6 | Premiere for new film shot in Richmond, Aug. 15

A film shot on location in Richmond will make its local debut at the Cinemark Century Hilltop 16 theaters. The 50-minute film, “Mr. Advocate,” was written and directed by former teacher Stacie McClam. The local premiere will feature a red carpet entrance beforehand and a question-and-answer session with the cast and crew after the screening. “Mr. Advocate” centers on a teacher whose AI-themed show turns a test-obsessed school upside down.

7 | Spawners seeks volunteers to help clean up creek, Aug. 15

The environmental organization Spawners is looking for volunteers to help clean up a residential creek in central Richmond. The Wilkie Creek Workday is an opportunity for community members to help mulch, weed, and pick up litter along the waterway. All ages are welcome. Organizers ask participants to wear sturdy shoes and bring a reusable water bottle. Volunteer workdays at Wilkie Creek take place on the third Saturday of every month.

8 | Soulful Softball Sunday brings community together, Aug. 16

Nicholl Park will host three games of community softball this weekend as part of the 11th Annual Soulful Softball Sunday, pitting six teams against each other. Renee McGee, a Richmond native and sister of former Major League Baseball player Willie McGee, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

9 | Arts of Point Richmond unveils Art Tag final presentation, Aug. 16

Arts of Point Richmond will unveil the final creations from its Art Tag project at a ceremony. The Art Tag final presentation will include the works of local artists who worked with the theme “What We Carry.” The project is similar to a chain letter: Participating artists create a piece in any medium based on the selected theme, then pass their creation to another artist and receive a different work with the same theme. Organizers repeat that process once more before displaying the final works at the presentation.

10 | Golden Gate Bird Alliance to lead bird-watching hike at Hilltop Lake, Aug. 19

The Golden Gate Bird Alliance has organized another scenic hike in Richmond. The excursion will consist of a flat, 1-mile walk around Hilltop Lake Park. Birders can expect to see woodpeckers, wrens, waders, shorebirds, hummingbirds, and raptors. The paved trail includes cement block benches in two spots. Only 20 participants can join, so organizers encourage pre-registration.
