Alameda restaurant openings

MIX Bar

05.05.26: A new cocktail bar focusing on mixed drinks and live DJs soft opened in Alameda. The menu includes drinks like a pandan old fashioned and a Sonrisa bourbon-based drink with calamansi and egg white. MIX Bar is run by some of the same folks behind the popular Somar Bar in Uptown Oakland, which closed about three years ago after a long stint in the neighborhood. Berkeley restaurant openings

ChaHalo

06.02.26: new milk tea spot has opened in Berkeley. ChaHalo is a chain from Xi’an, China, serving teas made from freshly steeped tea leaves (versus powder mixes). One of its signature drinks is the osmanthus oolong milk tea. ChaHalo, 2041 University Ave., Berkeley

Divan

06.23.26: Fourth Street in Berkeley has officially welcomed the new modern Turkish restaurant Divan, which soft opened on June 22. For now Divan is focusing on lunch service only, but expects to open for dinner service in the coming weeks. The menu features Turkish breakfasts, mezze platters, freshly baked flatbreads, and a variety of Mediterranean-inspired sandwiches and kebabs. Divan, 1788 Fourth St., Berkeley

Dropo Sushi

06.09.26: A new sushi shop has opened in downtown Berkeley that sells ready-made sushi boxes and also halo-halo, the colorful Filipino shaved ice dessert. Dropo Sushi is in the former location of Pink Cloud & Tea. The owners are of Tibetan and Filipino descent and say they opened the shop to “provide, healthy, fresh and reliable service to the community.” Dropo Sushi, 2107 addison St., Berkeley

Glom Thai

06.02.26: A new Thai spot has opened in Berkeley. Glom Thai recently soft opened with a menu of small plates, charcoal grilled dishes, whole fish, vegetarian dishes, and curries. Glom is in the former location of Sistory ThaiGlom Thai, 1233 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley

Gurkha Kitchen Express

06.02.26: A Nepali restaurant has opened in Berkeley, serving momos (dumplings), other Nepali dishes, and Indian cuisine. Gurkha has other locations in the Bay Area, including in Hayward, San Jose, and San Ramon. Gurkha Kitchen Express, 2493 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley

Hopkins Cafe

06.02.26: Hopkins Cafe is now open, in the former Espresso Roma space in North Berkeley. Its menu includes espresso drinks, juices, omelettes, bagels, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and milkshakes. Hopkins Cafe, 1549 Hopkins St., Berkeley

Mile Limit

06.30.26: Berkeley Wine Shop Mile Limit, from Sergio Monleón and Emily Sarlatte (the team behind La Marcha), is expanding into a wine bar and vinyl lounge. The lounge soft opens July 1 and will grand open the weekend of July 24. The menu will include wines by the glass, cheeseboards, housemade tins, crudos, anchovy butter toast, pastries, escabeches, and with DJ’s spinning records. Monleón shared with NOSH that the opening food menu will also include oysters with Shared Cultures’ miso-citrus mignonette, crudo with citrus and chili oil, burrata with seasonal fruit and saba, anchovy butter toast, pâté, and sardines. Oakberry Acai

06.30.26: The global acai chain, Oakberry Acai, is now open on University Avenue in downtown Berkeley. Oakberry serves build-your-own acai bowls, smoothies, and snacks. Oakberry Acai, 2121 University Ave., Berkeley

Serotonin Scoops

06.23.26: On June 19, a new high-protein, low-calorie, no-added-sugar ice cream shop debuted in the Epicurious Garden. It offers flavors like mint chip, coconut mango, double dutch chocolate and strawberry with added fiber and prebiotics. Serotonin Scoops, Epicurious Garden, 1511 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley

Ten Seconds Yunnan Rice Noodles

06.09.26: The story goes that a man was studying for his imperial exams during the Qing Dynasty on a small island off of Yunnan Province in China. His wife wanted to bring him a hot meal, and carried a hot broth with a layer of chicken fat on the top to keep it warm. Guo qiao mi xian(crossing-the-bridge noodles) was thus invented and is now a well-known, regional dish. Urban Matcha

06.23.26: Castro Valley has a new branch of Urban Matcha that is currently in its soft opening phase. Urban Match was founded in Las Vegas, and has expanded into California with a location in San Diego and now its first Northern California cafe. In addition to matcha, the menu includes hojicha, and the ice cream, sponge cakes, waffle cones, and adzuki bean toppings, are all made in-house. Urban Matcha, 3311 Castro Valley Blvd., Castro Valley

Miles Pizza Slice

06.23.26: Thanks to Nosh reader Kevin for the tip that Super Slice Pizza in El Cerrito has been quickly revamped into the new Miles Pizza Slice. The restaurants offer 18-inch takeout whole pizzas in addition to giant slices from 24-inch pies that are designed to be an “entire meal.” The pizzas are made with 48-hour, cold-fermented dough made with Keith Giusto Baking Supplies flours. Miles Pizza Slice, 10180 San Pablo Ave., El Cerrito 

Oakland restaurant openings

Aung Myanmar

06.23.26: The newest tenant at Swan’s Market is an offshoot of Burmese restaurants Aung Burma in Concord and Aung MayLiKa in Benicia. The restaurant kicked off its soft opening June 12 and held a grand opening on June 17. The menu includes tea leaf salad, garlic noodles, coconut curry chicken noodle soup, samosas and more. Aung Myanmar, 542B 9th Street Oakland, CA

El Barrio

06.30.26: From the team behind Xingones comes El Barrio, a new sports bar in Old Oakland — in the original Old Oakland location of Xingones. The corner restaurant has had a facelift and opened to the public Tuesday, June 30, in time to catch the final weeks of the World Cup. The menu features bar bites, such as wings and tacos, burritos, and drinks. El Barrio, 736 Washington St., Oakland

goop kitchen Berkeley

06.09.26: Actress and healthy living advocate Gwyneth Paltrow has been expanding her clean-eating pick-up and delivery meal company in the Bay Area, and the first East Bay location launched June 9. Everything on the menu, including loaded salads, chicken teriyaki bowls and salmon bento boxes, is made without gluten, seed oils, processed additives, refined sugars, or corn. The company has billed the new branch as “Berkeley” but it is operating out of the Adeline Food Hall in Oakland with delivery service to Berkeley, Oakland and Emeryville available Monday through Saturday. Paltrow started goop as a newsletter in 2008 and goop kitchen launched in 2021, with additional Bay Area locations in San Francisco, San Jose and Sunnyvale. Nosh tried some of the most popular goop dishes, asked why the “Berkeley” location wound up in Oakland, and ran down some of Paltrow’s recent controversies. goop kitchen, Adeline Food Hall, 5333 Adeline St., Oakland

Jjamppong Zizon

06.30.26: The popular South Korean chain, Jjamppong Zizon, has arrived in the East Bay. The Oakland location on Broadway serves the spicy famous seafood noodle soup along with Korean jjajangmyeon, a black bean sauce noodles. Millennium

06.23.26: Popular plant-based Rockridge restaurant Millennium returned to action on June 17 after a brief closure. The restaurant is open Wednesday through Saturday for prix fixe dinners on the patio and à la carte dining at the bar, plus walk-in indoor seating with self-seating and ordering. Starting in July, there are plans to bring back the Tuesday pizza program. Millennium, 5912 College Ave., Oakland 

Oakland Athletic Club

06.09.26: A group of local Oaklanders are breathing new life into the shuttered former location of the Athletic Club of Oakland, which closed in February. The newly renamed Oakland Athletic Club opened on June 1. Read the full scoop from NOSH. Oakland Athletic Club, 59 Grand Ave., Oakland

Paulina’s Cafecitos

06.30.26: A new cafe has opened near the Fruitvale neighborhood in Oakland. The Latina-owned shop, close to Fremont High, serves espresso drinks such as a banana cold foam latte and an horchata latte, matcha drinks, and lemonades. Paulina’s Cafecitos, 4200 Foothill Blvd., Oakland

Reem’s Jack London Square

06.30.26: The highly-anticipated Palestinian-Californian bakery and restaurant by Reem Assil has opened in Jack London Square. This is a homecoming of sorts, as Reem’s first opened as a brick-and-mortar in the Fruitvale neighborhood in 2017 and was also a vendor at the Old Oakland farmer’s market. Reem’s in Jack London Square is in the former Miette location and features a team of worker-owners. The menu includes signature wraps, such as a sumac chicken wrap, grab-and-go items, and coffee, tea, and other housemade drinks. Reem’s, 85 Webster St., Oakland

Shucos Magi

06.09.26: A popular Guatemalan food stand that has operated for years in Fruitvale has opened its first brick-and-mortar location in the Oakland neighborhood. Shucos Magi, owned and operated by Maria Rodas, who is known as Magi, and her family, is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. everyday except Tuesday, serving a full menu of Guatemalan and Mexican fare including signature shucos (loaded hot dogs), mulitas, tacos, quesabirria and more. Shucos Magi, 3329 Foothill Blvd., Oakland

Urban Go

06.23.26: A new market has opened in the ground floor of the Ms. Margaret Gordon West Port affordable housing community from the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation.
