Berkeley restaurant closures
House of Curries
05.29.26: A reader, Juliet, sent us the tip that House of Curries in Berkeley recently closed, and in its place is a new restaurant called Narwal Urban Village. However, the other two locations of House of Curries–one on College Avenue in Berkeley, and one on Solano Avenue in Albany, are both still open Nosh confirmed. Masa Ramen (temporary?)
05.08.26: Masa Ramen appears temporarily closed. The website is down, the phone number doesn’t work, and Yelp has reported Masa Ramen as temporarily closed until January 2027. There is a sign on the window that says “Closed for vacation / Be back 4.14.” So far, it appears to still be closed. Masa Ramen, 1923 University Ave., Berkeley
Yali’s Qualcomm Cafe
05.21.26: A tipster informed us that Yali’s Qualcomm Cafe on the Cal campus has closed. Yali’s also operates another cafe near campus, Yali’s Cafe, on Oxford Street. That one remains open. El Cerrito restaurant closure
Super Slice Pizza
06.05.26: NOSH reader Kevin shared that Super Slice Pizza in El Cerrito posted a sign on its counter stating that its last day would be May 31. Yelp lists the restaurant as closed and a recorded phone message confirms Super Slice is no more. But, all is not lost. Oakland restaurant closures
Clove & Hoof
05.08.26: After a reader tip, NOSH called and stopped by the restaurant at 40th Street and Broadway during regular hours and it was closed. Also, Google has listed Clove & Hoof in as permanently closed. Nosh has reached out to get more information. The restaurant opened in 2014, specializing in whole animal butchery, but in 2022 switched to only selling prepared foods. Clove & Hoof, 4001 Broadway, Oakland
Gold Palm
05.21.26: Gold Palm, an Uptown Oakland restaurant and bar, held its last day of service on May 27. Owners Shirin Raza and Daniel Gahr, who also own Bar Shiru, shared with NOSH that the restaurant was not financially sustainable. Gold Palm opened inside the historic Floral Depot building near the Fox Theater in fall 2024. The owners shared that they are available for “private bookings, community gatherings and team outings, with the idea that we will also be open periodically for special events in the neighborhood, such as select Fox shows and OSA concerts at Cloud Park.” Moonglow, a bar and music lounge next to Gold Palm, will remain open and will expand hours starting in June, with some of the familiar small bites such as Gold Palm’s masala fries. Mixé
05.14.26: Thanks to the tipster who let us know that the mezcal and espresso bar Mixé in Uptown Oakland has quietly closed. It’s reported as permanently closed on Yelp and the website is also no longer working. Mixé opened in the former Calavera space toward the end of 2024. Mixé was located at 2337 Broadway, Oakland
Planted Table
05.29.26: A Bay Area, Oakland-based plant-based food delivery service has shuttered. Planted Table, which operated out of Jack London Square, left a message on its website that states, in part: “The cost of food and utilities has gone up so dramatically over the years that it has become impossible to keep up.” Planted Table was open for over eight years and served chef-made, zero-waste vegan meals to many homes throughout the Bay Area. It was founded by Chef Lauren Mahlke and her sister, Megan Scott. The two wrote on their website that “This is hopefully not goodbye. We have ideas for the next version of Planted Table, and we will keep you updated as things take shape.”
Oken
05.08.26: Oken, one of the most talked about restaurant openings in Oakland one year ago, closed on May 31. The Rockridge restaurant, opened by Albert Ok (Ok’s Deli), served contemporary Korean and Japanese fare. “The restaurant industry is tough and we are not big on making excuses or elaborate sad stories,” the closing announcement on Instagram states. “We will take more time to reassess our situation and examine what our options are.” With dishes like chilled Sichuan chicken breast, ganjang fried chicken, tsukune dumpling noodle soup, and baechu (cabbage) salad, Oken, which opened in May 2025, was nominated for Best New Restaurant in the 2025 Nosh Awards. Souk Savanh 2.0
05.14.26: It appears after opening for a short time in Uptown, this Thai Lao restaurant is closed. In an Instagram post, the restaurant operators pointed, in part, to landlord disputes as the issue. Souk Savanh 2.0 was located at 1707 Telegraph Ave., Oakland
Richmond restaurant closures
Caspers Famous Hot Dogs
05.08.26: Caspers in Richmond closed on May 16. New owner Courtland “Corky” Booze, a former Richmond city council member, has already rebranded the restaurant as Corky’s Famous Hot Dogs, but little else has changed. Caspers was founded in 1934 on First Avenue in Oakland. The Richmond closure leaves locations in Oakland, Dublin, Hayward and Pleasant Hill as the last remaining Caspers restaurants. Special Noodle
05.29.26: Special Noodle, a chain restaurant with locations in Santa Cruz, San Jose, Las Vegas and elsewhere, has closed its Richmond location at the Pacific East Mall after four years in operation. The restaurant is listed as closed on Yelp and the phone number is disconnected. The menu was focused on noodle soups and dumplings. Special Noodle was at 3288 Pierce St. C136, Richmond
