The Contra Costa County registrar of voters’ final tally of outstanding ballots Tuesday did not change the outcome of any local races.
A total of 539,219 ballots were cast in the Nov. 5 election, 74.6% of Contra Costa County’s registered voters. About half of the county’s ballots are received at times other than on Election Day, and that’s why it can take some time for results to be certified and considered final.
Richmond City Council
Elections were held in Richmond City Council districts 1, 5 and 6. Since Election Day the candidates have mostly acknowledged their respective wins or losses.
- In District 1, Jamelia Brown led incumbent Melvin Willis by 357 votes.
- In District 5, Ahmad Anderson had already conceded to Sue Wilson, who appears to have won the seat being vacated by longtime Richmond politician Gayle McLaughlin.
- In District 6, incumbent candidate Claudia Jimenez appears to have kept her seat, and she acknowledged her apparent win by thanking supporters last month.
Ballot measures
Of the two ballot measures looking to change the way Richmond conducts elections, Measure J, which establishes primaries for municipal elections, defeated Measure L which would have brought ranked-choice voting to the city.
In total, Measure J received 20,465 “yes” votes while Measure L received 19,284, according to the Contra Costa County registrar of voters’ final tally.
WCCUSD school board
Residents of the West Contra Costa Unified School District’s Area 2, which includes the Richmond shoreline north of the bridge and Richmond neighborhoods such as Atchison Village, Coronado and North and East, voted for change, electing newcomer Guadalupe Enllana, who ran against incumbent Otheree Christian, who said last month he was “crushed but not perplexed.”
(There were two other seats up for election, but those candidates ran unopposed so will automatically assume office in January 2025.)
Contra Costa County Office of Education board
Daniel Heiss of Richmond appears to have won the seat representing Area 1, which includes El Cerrito, El Sobrante, San Pablo, Pinole, Richmond, and parts of Kensington. His opponent Anthony Caro conceded the race to Heiss with a statement posted last month.
