An 81-year-old Richmond man died Sunday evening after being struck by a vehicle on Hellings Avenue at 23rd Street.
Richmond police say the driver left the scene.
The victim, identified by family members on social media as Rafael Delgado, was hit just after 8 p.m. as he was leaving the Bahia de Jiquilisco restaurant a block away.
It is unclear if Delgado died there or at a hospital.
“Our Traffic Unit investigators are actively investigating the incident and following up on leads,” Richmond police said in an email. “As this remains an active and ongoing investigation, we do not have any additional information to release at this time.”
Delgado’s family said in a social media flyer that no vehicle has been identified and is asking the community for any personal camera footage that may have captured what happened. They are also encouraging anyone with information to call Richmond police at (510) 233-1214.
“If you witnessed the collision, saw a vehicle, or have any details no matter how small, please help us seek justice for Rafael,” the flyer reads.
Richmond police said that they will release more information “as it becomes available and when it can be released without compromising the investigation.”
