Some of Richmond’s fire stations were built as early as 1942 and have not seen meaningful improvements since. Firefighters fear outdated alarm systems won’t alert them to emergencies while they’re asleep, and their sleeping areas look more like office cubicles. And, they say, many stations were built long before modern earthquake standards and may not withstand the next big one.
Property owners would pay on average $22.15 per $100,000 of assessed value until about 2060. The median assessed value of a residential home in Richmond is about $600,000. If passed, the median cost for a homeowner would be about $133.
