Community invited to discuss report on Chevron cancer risks
The Bay Area Air District is hosting a public meeting to discuss a report that found that emissions from the Chevron refinery could negatively impact the health of people in the surrounding neighborhoods. The district released a preliminary health assessment stating that refinery neighbors face an elevated risk of developing cancer over a lifetime and have a higher risk of illness from short-term exposure to excess emissions. Chevron officials have criticized the report, saying they found “significant issues” with it.

Richmond temple announces High Holy Days schedule
Temple Beth Hillel has announced its schedule for the upcoming High Holy Days celebration for the Jewish year 5787. The events begin on Sat., Sept. 5, with a study session and a ritual changing of the Torah scrolls. They continue on Sept. 11-12 with several services for Rosh Hashanah. Observances will also be held Sept. 20-21 for Yom Kippur.

State officials urging Californians to get COVID-19 vaccinations
The California Department of Public Health is encouraging everyone to get vaccinated against COVID-19, as cases typically begin to increase in the fall months. Health officials say the COVID vaccine has proven safe and effective in preventing serious illness and even death in children and adults. It’s recommended that everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated. Immunocompromised people, as well as adults 65 and older, may need more than one dose per year. Two open positions on county’s Fish and Wildlife Commission
Officials are looking to fill two at-large seats on the Contra Costa County Fish and Wildlife Committee. Existing members seeking reappointment and individuals seeking a new appointment may apply. Applications are due by Nov. 9. The commission advises the Contra Costa Board of Supervisors on fish and wildlife issues, including enforcement of laws and regulations. The committee meets six times a year on the third Wednesday of the month from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
