State health officials remind parents about back-to-school vaccinations
California public health officials are reminding parents of the importance of getting their children vaccinated before school starts. The state’s Shots for School website provides information what’s required. California law requires students to receive age-appropriate immunizations to attend public and private schools and licensed childcare centers.
Classes starting for Richmond YouthBUILD training, Aug. 11
The latest session of the Richmond YouthBUILD program starts soon, with courses beginning Aug. 11. The program is designed for youths ages 16 to 24. The classes provide students with hands-on experience in construction while helping them complete their high school education. The program focuses on skills development, leadership and career readiness, and it also provides job placement assistance.
Information session for potential new homeowners, Aug. 19
Richmond Neighborhood Housing Services is hosting an online information session for people who want to move into new affordably priced housing units in North Richmond’s Las Deltas neighborhood. The seminar will provide information on available properties, eligibility requirements, and deed restrictions. Priority will be given to former Las Deltas residents and people who currently live or work in North Richmond or used to live there.

Immigration enforcement report at supervisors meeting, Aug. 25
The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors will hear a report from the Sheriff’s Department on civil immigration enforcement activities. The TRUTH Act Community Forum will include 2025 data on responses to requests from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials for information on serious or violent offenders currently in custody. The report is part of a California law that requires local jurisdictions to hold an annual public forum and report on certain interactions with federal immigration authorities.

East Bay Regional Park District appoints new general manager
The East Bay Regional Park District board of directors has appointed Max Korten as the district’s new general manager. Korten has been serving as acting general manager since November and has been with the district since October 2024. He has been in park services since becoming a forest ranger with the National Park Service 27 years ago. He also worked at Marin County Parks for 10 years, including eight years as director and general manager. Korten holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from UC Santa Cruz and a master’s degree in natural resources from Cal Poly Humboldt. He lives with his family in Berkeley, where he is a regular on the trails of Tilden Regional Park.
Backers of November transit tax measure release new poll
The proponents of a transit tax on the November ballot have released a poll showing majority support for the measure. Officials at Connect Bay Area say the poll of 1,700 likely voters in five Bay Area counties shows that 54% support the sales tax hike. The initiative would increase the sales tax by a half-cent per dollar in Contra Costa, Alameda, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties and by 1 cent per dollar in San Francisco. The measure aims to provide long-term operational funding for Bay Area transit agencies, including BART, AC Transit, Caltrain and Muni.
Garamendi seeks nominations for 2026 Women of the Year
U.S. Rep. John Garamendi’s office is now accepting nominations for its 2026 Women of the Year celebration. The awards recognize women who, through their work or volunteerism, have improved the quality of life for people in Garamendi’s 8th congressional district. The deadline to submit nominations is Sept. 11. The recognition ceremony will take place in October. The 8th congressional district includes Richmond, San Pablo, Pinole, and other west Contra Costa County communities.
