Applications due for $1,000 clean air grants
State officials are accepting applications for $1,000 clean air grants through Fri., July 17. The California Clean Air Day Microgrant program funds community events taking place the week before California Clean Air Day, which is Oct. 7. Events must raise awareness of Clean Air Day and engage at least 100 participants. In previous years, qualifying events have included bike or walk to school days, clean air fairs, and indoor air quality education seminars.
BART to run limited transbay service July 19 for maintenance
BART riders heading to San Francisco on Sunday should expect fewer trains and longer delays as maintenance crews replace lights in the Transbay Tube — the third and final round of a series of maintenance days. The repairs required reducing service from two tracks to one, with trains running every 30 minutes systemwide. Only three lines run that day: the yellow Antioch route to San Francisco, the blue Dublin to San Francisco line and the orange Richmond to North San Jose line. The red Richmond to San Francisco and green North San Jose to San Francisco lines will not run.
Richmond police report six arrests, fireworks seizures during July 4 weekend
The Richmond Police Department deployed 16 additional sworn personnel over the Fourth of July weekend to address illegal fireworks, celebratory gunfire, and other holiday-related incidents. Officers made six arrests, issued six fireworks citations, confiscated illegal fireworks, recovered a stolen loaded firearm, dispersed crowds, and addressed roadway closures — including an unlawful assembly that blocked Macdonald Avenue.
BikeMobile offering free bicycle repairs and safety inspections at two Richmond library branches
Richmond residents can bring their bicycles in for free repairs, maintenance, safety inspections, and cycling information at two library branch events. All ages are welcome.
The BikeMobile will visit the West Side Branch Library in Point Richmond on Wed., July 22, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the Bayview Branch Library on Thur., July 23, from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Banners featuring youth artwork now adorn 23rd Street
Color and creativity are brightening up the 23rd Street corridor thanks to ten banners featuring art by young artists via the NIAD Art Center. The banners, hung from street lights, feature works created in watercolor workshops where young participants worked alongside NIAD studio artists. For many of them, it was their first time creating art in a real studio setting.
Improvements at four bridges in Richmond
Reconstruction work has begun on four bridges within the Richmond city limits — three on the Richmond Parkway and one at the Pennsylvania Avenue pedestrian bridge. City officials say the work will preserve and strengthen a total of 1.2 miles over the four bridge decks by applying a protective waterproof coating, replacing worn expansion joints, making targeted structural repairs and installing new lane striping. The Federal Bridge Preventive Maintenance Program is primarily funding the project.
