Dropo Sushi
A new sushi shop has opened in downtown Berkeley that sells ready-made sushi boxes and also halo-halo, the colorful Filipino shaved ice dessert. Dropo Sushi is in the former location of Pink Cloud & Tea. Actress and healthy living advocate Gwyneth Paltrow has been expanding her clean-eating pick-up and delivery meal company in the Bay Area, and the first East Bay location launched June 9. Everything on the menu, including loaded salads, chicken teriyaki bowls and salmon bento boxes, is made without gluten, seed oils, processed additives, refined sugars, or corn. The company has billed the new branch as “Berkeley” but it is operating out of the Adeline Food Hall in Oakland with delivery service to Berkeley, Oakland and Emeryville available Monday through Saturday. Oakland Athletic Club
A group of local Oaklanders are breathing new life into the shuttered former location of the Athletic Club of Oakland, which closed in February. Shucos Magi
A popular Guatemalan food stand that has operated for years in Fruitvale has opened its first brick-and-mortar location in the Oakland neighborhood. Shucos Magi, owned and operated by Maria Rodas, who is known as Magi, and her family, is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. everyday except Tuesday, serving a full menu of Guatemalan and Mexican fare including signature shucos (loaded hot dogs), mulitas, tacos, quesabirria and more. Ten Seconds Yunnan Rice Noodles
The story goes that a man was studying for his imperial exams during the Qing Dynasty on a small island off of Yunnan Province in China. His wife wanted to bring him a hot meal, and carried a hot broth with a layer of chicken fat on the top to keep it warm. Guo qiao mi xian (crossing-the-bridge noodles) was thus invented and is now a well-known, regional dish.
