1 | Annual fundraiser shines spotlight on children’s programs, April 24

The RYSE Center is inviting adults to reconnect with their inner child at the nonprofit organization’s annual fundraiser. The Be a Kid! Let’s Be Together gathering features food, drinks, music and dancing. Its purpose is to bring adults together to “reconnect, recharge and recommit to young people.”

2 | ‘Gods of Comedy’ opens at Point Richmond theater, April 24

A comedy involving professors and Greek gods is opening Friday at the Masquers Playhouse in Point Richmond. “The Gods of Comedy” tells the tale of two young classics professors who enlist the help of some Greek gods when a discovery goes disastrously wrong.

3 | One-woman show explores prejudice faced by Black women, April 24

Oakland-based theater artist Kathryn Seaborn brings her stage show on the issues facing Black women to Contra Costa College for one night. “Angry Black Woman 101” highlights the microaggressions, tropes and misogynoir Black women face. The 60-minute show will be followed by a 30-minute panel discussion. Attendees must be at least 21 years old.

4 | Civil Rights leader will speak at Indivisible event, April 25

Civil Rights scholar john a. powell will speak at a community gathering at Contra Costa College. powell, a law professor at UC Berkeley and the director of the Othering and Belonging Institute at the university, will talk about how faith communities, neighborhood organizations and civic groups can build the kind of deep, lasting institutional power that shapes democracy from the ground up. The “community conversation” has been organized by Indivisible West Contra Costa County, Richmond Friends of Recreation, Indivisible North East Bay, and Richmond Indivisible. The event is free, but donations are accepted.

5 | Improve your health at Park Rx Day, April 25

Good medicine comes to Nicholl Park with the city-sponsored Park Rx Day. The fun-oriented event includes community fitness classes, rock climbing and human hamster balls, sports and games, all designed to improve health and well-being. A free lunch and the chance to chat with healthcare professionals are also part of the day.

6 | Watershed groups lead tour of Parchester shoreline and Dotson Family Marsh, April 25

Environmental groups are teaming up to lead a tour of the Richmond shoreline near Parchester Village. The Watershed Project and the San Francisco Estuary Institute will join the Parchester Village Neighborhood Council in leading the Parchester Shoreline Tour through the Dotson Family Marsh. Participants can learn about local plants and animals along this coastline and how this ecosystem affects the Parchester neighborhood. The tour will include a light lunch. Participants should meet at the Parchester Village Community Center.

7 | Spring Family Day at Richmond Art Center, April 25

Kids can check out art as well as make some of their own at a family-oriented event at the Richmond Art Center. The Spring Family Day will offer drop-in art activities, including making seed paper and painting bisqueware. The open house, which follows the theme “Making and Growing Across Generations,” also features an elder writing and movement workshop.

8 | Point Richmond artists showcase a chain of creativity at Art Tag Big Reveal, April 26

Local artists are gathering in Point Richmond to showcase the final masterpieces of a sort of chain letter among artists. Art Tag – The Big Reveal will put the spotlight on creations built upon each other’s works under the theme of “Anything That Flies.” The exhibit is the final step in this year’s Art Tag program at the Arts of Point Richmond, in which an artist creates a piece in any medium under that theme and then passes it along to two other artists who build upon the original work.

9 | Screening of local documentary on Mexican heritage and music, April 30

A documentary made by the founder of Los Cenzontles, “Bird of Four Hundred Voices,” described as a “Mexican American memoir of music and belonging,” will be screened next week. The 90-minute documentary tells the personal story of Eugene Rodriguez, who founded Los Cenzontles in 1989, and is based on his book of the same name.

10 | Richmond Commission on Aging hosts senior transportation workshop, April 30

A community workshop focused on transportation services for older adults has been organized by the Richmond Commission on Aging. The 3rd Annual Senior Transportation Workshop and Town Hall Event is designed to expand awareness of local transportation options and promote dialogue between older adults and service providers. The theme of this year’s event is “Aging Independently, Senior-Style” with an emphasis on bicycling around Richmond.
