A pair of people shot at each other Thursday morning, leaving one dead in the Fairmede-Hilltop neighborhood, marking Richmond’s first homicide of 2026.

In a press release posted on Facebook Thursday night, Richmond police said that officers responded to shots being fired at about 10:59 a.m. on Aberdeen Way at the Baycliff Apartments where they found one person dead.

A second person who was involved reportedly drove themselves to a trauma center.

“The preliminary investigation indicates the two involved parties exchanged gunfire with each other,” the press release stated. “At this time investigators do not believe there are any outstanding suspects and there is no known ongoing threat to public safety.”

It is unclear if the second person involved was arrested and detectives are still “actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting,” according to the release.

Richmondside reached out to Richmond police but did not hear back by publication time.

Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to contact RPD detectives at (510) 620-6616.
