21st Amendment Brewery
What was once one of the largest brewing companies in the U.S. is now planning to close at the end of the year. 21st Amendment Brewery, whose brewing operations are headquartered in San Leandro, announced Nov. 4 will be its last day. Owner Nico Freccia told the SF Chronicle his company’s sales have declined by roughly 20% every year since 2021, and that the brewery’s lender will no longer fund the business due to its “cash bleed.” 21st Amendment was located 2010 Williams St. in San Leandro.
Edith’s Pie
In a gut-wrenching Instagram post, the beloved Edith’s Pie announced its plans to shutter this autumn.
“We’re slinging pie while Rome burns,” the post reads, painting a grim picture of running a business in the current economic and political landscape. “We are down at minimum 31%, with many days now averaging 20 people.”
“Over the past five and a half years we have pivoted, opened new avenues, tried new things, and jumped through every hoop we have been able to find. Over, and over, and over again. This moment, like the moment we started, feels equally uncertain, and equally destabilizing. We are being bombarded by chaotic and impulsive changes that impact each and every one of us. The goal is to overwhelm. And we are officially overwhelmed.”
Owners Mike Raskin and Jeffrey Wright said in the post they hope to stay open through the Thanksgiving holiday season, but for now, it’s hard to say what the future holds. Until then, you can still order pies for pickup before they’re gone for good. Edith’s Pie is located at 412 22nd St. (between Grand Ave. and Franklin) in Oakland.
Seoul Hotdog
Seoul Hotdog served its last Korean corn dog on September 6. An announcement on the Berkeley campus storefront stated the business was closing with gratitude, but didn’t provide context for the closure. Seoul Hotdog was known for serving creative snacks like spicy mozzarella dogs and hot Cheeto dogs wrapped in crunchy batter. Seoul Hotdog was located at 2505 Hearst Ave. (between Euclid Ave. and Etcheverry Ln.) in Berkeley.
