Just a week after the first day of school, Downer Elementary School in San Pablo was locked down for most of the day Tuesday after a teen fired shots at a car nearby. The 16-year-old was later arrested at Richmond High School.
San Pablo police said in a press release that gunshots were heard at about 9:42 a.m. near 20th Street and Sanford Avenue. A witness reported seeing a male pointing a handgun at a vehicle with tinted windows. Both the suspect and the car left in opposite directions.
Because it happened so close to Downer, the K-6 school, located at 1231 18th St., was placed on lockdown until 1:40 p.m. as a precautionary safety measure.
A 22-year-old family member of the suspect was arrested in San Pablo as a suspected accessory, and police found out who the teen was and arrested at the high school without incident.
Police said they believe this was an isolated incident and that the person in the vehicle was the intended target. It’s unknown if anyone was injured, and hospitals were contacted and asked to report treating anyone with suspicious injuries.
Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the San Pablo Police Department Investigations Division at (510) 215-3150.
