people clap and raise glasses at a part
Attendees at Richmondside's one-year anniversary party toast the news website's first full year of providing Richmonders with a source of free, independent journalism.

Richmondside recently had the honor of spending an evening with nearly 80 readers, members and city and county leaders to celebrate our first anniversary.

The group gathered on a pleasantly warm night at The Backyard to mark this milestone for the Richmond-focused news website.

At a time when newsrooms are struggling to stay open, and large public media operations are seeing funding cuts, celebrating wins — like a new newsroom that is growing — felt more important than ever.

Such wins include: Adding a second full-time reporter only nine months after the site launched; surpassing 5,000 newsletter subscribers; and publishing a year-long in-depth investigation of Richmond’s air quality that we’ll discuss at an upcoming public event.

None of that would have happened without the support of Richmond residents.

So, if you missed the champagne toasts that night (yes, we toasted twice!), enjoy these pictures by freelance photographer Kelly Sullivan, and raise a glass of whatever you have handy, because Richmondside is charging into its second year devoted to delivering more stories that help you be as engaged and informed as possible. Cheers!

If you’ve never been to The Backyard, it’s a jungle-like outdoor oasis serving beer, wine and very delicious food.
We tried to keep the speeches to a minimum, but we appreciated the supportive applause!

This Atchison Village resident shared a useful Richmond insider tip with Editor-in-Chief Kari Hulac: There’s an avid group of open-water swimmers that meet at Keller Beach and other spots to swim in San Francisco Bay. Sign up on Gaggle and you might run into Hulac on a salty wave.

The Backyard’s cozy nooks nurture quiet convos

We made sure to hold our event at a family-friendly venue.
Dogs were welcome too, at Richmondside’s anniversary party, held at The Backyard on Cutting Boulevard.

Can you spot some of Richmondside’s story sources in the crowd?

Vernon Whitmore, a former newspaper publisher, has a laugh with his wife, Linda Jackson-Whitmore, and Marisol Cantu. We’ve quoted Cantu, a local activist, many times and profiled Whitmore in a feature story.
Local historian and comedian Karen Buchanan, once featured in a Richmondside article, chats with county supervisor John Gioia’s district coordinator Robert Rogers, a former journalist.
Editor-in-Chief Kari Hulac gave education volunteer Robin Wilson a shoutout at Richmondside’s one-year anniversary party. Wilson has been giving local teachers free books for 25 years and was featured in a Richmondside story.

Visitors stopped by a video booth and did a scavenger hunt; prizes were to be had

Attendees at Richmondside’s one-year anniversary party were invited to record a video where they answered a question such as, “What’s something people should know about Richmond?”
Neon stickers were available to decorate name tags with, providing details such as “I work for a nonprofit” or “I’ve lived in Richmond 10+ years” to help attendees get to know one another better.
Two Richmond Annex residents deployed their stickers appropriately.
Step and repeat. Richmondside staffers from left: City Reporter Joel Umanzor, Editor-in-Chief Kari Hulac and Education Reporter Jana Kadah.
Community members reconnected with familiar faces and met plenty of new ones.
Thank you to everyone who attended the party. If you missed it, there’s another gathering planned for Sept. 11. Learn more about it.
