There’s lots to keep you entertained and informed this week. Plus: don’t miss our list of live music and entertainment events in the coming weekRichmond summer events; a roundup of where to go swimming; and ongoing things to do in Richmond (many of which are free).

1) Educational walk at Point Pinole park this evening

Learn about Point Pinole Regional Shoreline park during a 90-minute community walk. Spawners, a nonprofit organization whose primary mission is the protection of the San Pablo Creek watershed, is hosting the free educational jaunt. Along the way, East Bay Regional Park District ecologists Rose Samuelson and Kristen Van Dam will discuss the latest restoration efforts along the coastline.

The Point Pinole walk, Thursday, July 24, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., beginning at the Atlas Road Staging Area, 3000 Atlas Rd, Richmond.

2) Create your own soulful art

Explore your creative endeavors at an artists’ workshop Friday and Saturday at an Art for the Soul gathering sponsored by the Arts of Point Richmond. The event is designed for people who have never picked up a paint brush as well as those who want to get back into creative pursuits after taking a break. A variety of materials will be used, including paint, collage and drawing. “This is more than just an art class. It’s a gentle invitation to slow down, express yourself freely, and maybe learn something new about the art process and yourself,” the event organizers said.

Art for the Soul, Friday, July 25, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sat., July 25, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at RAH Studio, Studio C, 217 West Richmond Ave. There is no set fee. Payments are on a donation basis.

3) Second summer movie night features ‘Mufasa’

The latest screening of Richmond’s free “Movies in the Park” series takes place this Friday. This is the second of four family-friendly, outdoor movie nights organized by the city of Richmond.  Friday’s screening is the Disney film Mufasa. Attendees are encouraged to bring snacks, chairs and blankets to enjoy the movie with friends and family. Future Friday movie nights are on Aug. 8 in Marina Bay Park (Moana 2 )and Aug. 22 in the Richmond Rec Complex (Sonic 3).

The latest Movies in the Park screening of ‘Musafa,’ Friday, July 25, at 8 p.m., at Tiller Park at Key Boulevard and Sierra Avenue.

4) Special showing of protest photo exhibit

Get an in-depth look at a Mobilize, Organize, Occupy, an exhibition about activism in the Bay Area by the photographer Kenneth P. Green Sr., at a gallery walk-through this weekend at the Richmond Art Center. The free tour will be led by Green’s son, Kenneth P. Green Jr. The exhibit features photographs of three demonstrations from the 1960s and 1970s, including a Black Panther rally in Richmond.

5) Richmond church celebrates 100th anniversary

McGlothen Temple Church of God in Christ is marking 100 years of existence with a festival this weekend. The MGT Homecoming Fest 2025 will offer music, food for purchase, and activities for all ages, and is part of a weekend-long celebration that includes 100th-anniversary worship services at noon and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Church leaders are inviting members past and present, as well as local residents, to attend. McGlothen was founded in 1925 in the home of Willie Miles. The church’s current facility was built in 1946.

6) Wellness fair for mind, body and spirit

Attend a health and wellness fair that includes screenings and backpacks this weekend at the MacDonald Avenue Church of Christ in Richmond. The free Unity in the Community outdoor festival will offer health information and screenings for diabetes and high blood pressure, as well as school supplies, backpacks, gently used clothing and hygiene kits.

“Our goal is to share knowledge and resources for total health – mind, body and spirit,” church leaders said. “Many individuals are at risk for diseases that are preventable and it is our endeavor to bring awareness and education to this population.”

The Unity in the Community wellness fair, Saturday, July 26, from noon to 3 p.m. at the MacDonald Avenue Church of Christ, 4709 Macdonald Ave. in Richmond. Church leaders are seeking out community members to set up information tables for the fair.

7) Community BBQ at bookstore focuses on kids

Help children get ready for school by attending the free Comm-Unity BBQ at The Multicultural Bookstore & Gift, where kids can get back-to-school supplies and clothing, as well as haircuts and face painting. Everett & Jones BBQ will be serving up to 300 lunches. Other sponsors include Barber CJ and Soles4Souls.

8) Learn the art of Zentangle at the library

Learn how to produce unique drawings by following structured patterns at an informational seminar at the Zentangle Workshop. The class on this unique artform will be taught by Zentangle instructor June Kamerling.

9) Fundraising race hits the streets of Richmond

Run a race and help the community this weekend at the 9th Annual We Run Richmond 5K which also offers a 3.1-mile race, as well as a sprint for children. Proceeds go to Moving Forward, a nonprofit that works to improve the local community through health, academics and community service.

The 9th Annual We Run Richmond 5K, Sunday, July 27, beginning at 9 a.m. at Marina Bay Park, 1280 Melville Square in Richmond. Entry fee is $69.99 for the 5K and $44.99 for the sprint. Prices increase on race day.

10) Hike for people over 55 at Miller/Knox park

The Over-The-Hills Gang excursion is designed for people 55 years and older who are interested in nature, history, fitness and fun. The free event is sponsored by the East Bay Regional Park District and will be led by naturalist Anthony Fisher.

The Over-The-Hills Gang hike, Tuesday, July 29, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., beginning in the Dornan Drive parking lot at the Miller/Knox Regional Shoreline Park.

11) First Richmond Nosh Happy Hour

Richmondside and the folks at Nosh, which bring you all the delicious East Bay food stories you see on Richmondside, are hosting a special gathering to connect with the local community. The Nosh Happy Hour will be next Wednesday at the Factory Bar. Special menu items are available for purchase.
