Several people were arrested Tuesday after a carjacking led to an hours-long standoff at a Richmond Annex home, but one of the suspects escaped, police said.

The carjacking happened at about 11 p.m. near a gas station at the corner of Central Avenue and Pierce Street, according to Richmond police. When police arrived, one person was arrested while two others fled, with one running into a house on the 2900 block of San Luis Street.

“Officers established a perimeter and ordered the occupants to exit the residence. Officers could see people inside the house who refused to cooperate,” RPD Lt. Donald Patchin told Richmondside in an email.

Officers fired multiple flash grenades, devices that use a loud noise and light flash, into the home after those inside refused to come outside, according to a KTVU report.

Patchin said that although two occupants of the home who didn’t cooperate were arrested, a third person who had fled from the carjacking scene was not found.

“Unfortunately, the third suspect who fled into the residence evaded capture,” he said. “Detectives are actively working the case.”

A neighbor who did not want to be identified for their safety told Richmondside a commotion started around midnight.

“I didn’t know exactly what was going on, but it went on for hours,” she said.

By 8:30 a.m., police had left the area, with a broken window remaining visible from the street.
