Discover Community Cafe

After years of existing as a pop-up, worker cooperative Discover Community Café has recently established itself in a West Oakland brick and mortar, sharing the same space as Soul Blends Coffee Roasters. Per its website, Discover Community’s goal is to create jobs for people overcoming barriers to employment through food, as well as to “feature one to two local chefs every six months, providing a platform to test out menus, grow their following, and provide a culinary adventure for guests as they discover local chefs through the rotating menu.” The café will also serve local coffee, tea, beer and wine. Yonsei Handrolls

Update 05.01.25: The official opening of Yonsei Handrolls was delayed as the restaurant secured some final permits, but it is now open as of May 1.

Original post: Yonsei Handrolls, the Uptown Oakland sushi joint specializing in open-faced Japanese temaki (sushi handrolls), will open a second location in Albany on April 23. Owner and chef Kyle Itani, who rose to local acclaim after opening upscale diner Hopscotch in 2012, is also behind Itani Ramen next door, as well as two Itani Sushi locations in Oakland and Berkeley. In addition to fresh hand rolls, Yonsei will serve sake flights, Japanese twists on classic cocktails and a selection of Japanese whisky. Yonsei Handrolls, 905 San Pablo Ave., Albany
