The Bay Area Rescue Mission will continue serving free Thanksgiving dinners this week until Nov. 28 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at 200 Macdonald Ave. Volunteers are needed to help with serving.

The dinners are open to the public and walk-ins are welcome. For more information call 510-215-4864 or email volunteers@bayarearescue.org.

The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano counties partner pantries will distribute free holiday food items in November and December.

For Thanksgiving, the Multicultural Institute, 3600 MacDonald Ave., plans to distribute food Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Its regularly hours are Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Call 510-847-1479 to confirm hours and special holiday distributions.

As different cultures celebrate different types of holidays, the organization advises calling the pantry of your choice directly to confirm holiday hours, eligibility requirements and whether it will be offering food for the holiday you are celebrating. Visit the website for a list of 16 locations distributing food in Richmond and other Contra Costa County cities.

Black Neighborhood Network gave away turkeys Sunday

Since 2016, the nonprofit Black Neighborhood Network group has held an annual Thanksgiving Turkey Drive to ensure that Richmond families in need can enjoy a full Thanksgiving meal.

In partnership with Prospect Sierra Schools, whose contributions since 2020 have helped TBN serve more than 500 families each year, TBN says it’s able to give families a turkey and a bag of essential holiday food items.

Free turkeys

WHEN: Sunday, Nov. 24, 9 a.m. to noon.

WHERE: 3230 Macdonald Ave.

DETAILS: Participants must register for the giveaway, but note that a registration doesn’t guarantee one will receive a turkey. Supplies are limited so arriving early at the drive-through pick-up location is recommended.

MORE INFO: Sign up here to volunteer to help with the giveaway. For more information, call 510-367-6671 or email theblackneighborhood@gmail.com.

This year’s event was held at the Richmond City Recreation Complex. Families were required to register in advance.

Some turkey giveaway tips:

  • Registrants will receive an Eventbrite ticket and QR code good for one turkey and food bag per household.
  • Bring your ticket. The code can only be scanned once so no sharing of codes is allowed. However, more than one family can carpool to the event, as long as each recipient has their own QR code.
  • ID may be required to verify your registration.
