Hello Richmondside readers, here are some highlights of things to do and know this week. You can enjoy live music at The Backyard, build paper airplanes with engineers, cheer on Richmond scholars, and join your neighbors for National Night Out.

National Night Out is Tuesday

The city of Richmond, in collaboration with Neighbor-to-Neighbor, is hosting National Night Out. Residents are encouraged to come out and meet their neighbors and enjoy a night of fun. The kick-off event, hosted by The Santa Fe Neighborhood Council, starts at 4:30 p.m. at Southside Park, between Virginia Avenue and South Sixth Street. Attendees can enjoy food from The Backyard and Anaviv Wood Stove Pizza, live music from Steven Green and The Lifeline and free games for kids. 

Residents can visit different neighborhoods to connect with local police and fire stations, elected officials, community groups, and local businesses. The night ends with a joint celebration hosted by the Parchester Shields-Reid and Iron Triangle neighborhood councils, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Parchester Community Center, 900 Williams Drive. Build paper airplanes with engineers Saturday

Join the Richmond Public library and The American Society of Civil Engineers for its Paper Airplane Engineers-in-training event, from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at 325 Civic Center Plaza. The event, which is led by engineering professionals, will guide attendees through designing, building, and testing paper airplanes. Attendees will receive a certificate for their achievement.     

Richmond Promise celebrates college-bound students Saturday

Richmond Promise is hosting its ninth-annual Scholar Celebration from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, at Civic Center Plaza. The free event invites the community to celebrate its newest group of college-bound students. The event will feature games, information booths hosted by local colleges and universities, community resources, and food trucks. 

Richmond Listening Lounge pop-up is Saturday

For The Love of Music is a Richmond pop-up event described as a night filled with great music and good vibes. The event is 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday at 951 Marina Way South, Unit G. Tickets can be purchased online, and attendees are encouraged to bring a friend, with a two-for-one ticket deal at $17.85. Single tickets are $33.85. Two free beverages are included with the purchase of a ticket, as well as complimentary snacks. Performers include Bay Area DJs DJ Rick Lee, DJ UC BUU, and a guest performance by Dez Mac.  

Western throwdown Sunday at Armistice Brewing

For a completely different musical experience, enjoy a night of toe-tapping tunes at Armistice Brewing Sunday when the Whiskey Brothers take the stage, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., 845 Marina Park Way. The Whiskey Brothers are described as a bluegrass, Western swing, old time and Mexican polka musical act.

Come to The Backyard for its Magnificent Chill 3 music event hosted by Chano Tizon. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, at The Backyard, 205 Cutting Blvd. Get ready to immerse yourself in a night of eclectic beats and ambient tunes. With performances by the Bay Area All Stars, Phosphorus Music, Chiller Gang, Corrie Tizon, Bill Croughan. Attendees are asked to make a $10 donation. The Backyard is an outdoor beer and wine garden that also serves burgers, sandwiches, and tartines. For the full menu, visit The Backyard.  

Ongoing events: Thrive Thursdays, Tai Chi for seniors, family storytime

Every week, local agencies and organizations host a variety of recurring events. See our calendar for more and add your local events there too, for free.

  • For seniors, every Thursday the Seniors Network Activity Program hosts free Tai Chi. From 11 a.m.-12 p.m. at Lifelong William Jenkins Wellness Center, 150 Harbour Way. Attendees are advised to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Sessions are open to both seated and standing participants. For more information call (510) 684-9266. 
  • Saturdays at the Richmond Recreation Complex, 9 a.m.-2 p.m., 3230 Macdonald Ave. Enjoy instructional activities such as Zumba, soccer, basketball, and chess Visit the website to register. Children under the age of 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Infant & Toddler Music and Movement Storytime, 10:30 a.m.-11:15 a.m. Mondays, Richmond Main Library, 325 Civic Center Plaza. This Richmond Public Library Children’s Room program includes songs, fingerplays and books that are designed for families with babies and toddlers, but all ages of children are welcome.  
  • Family Storytime, 10:30 a.m.-11:15 a.m. Wednesdays, Richmond Main Library, 325 Civic Center Plaza. This Richmond Public Library Childrens Room program is geared toward families with toddlers, the event is a storytime session with a Richmond librarian.
