Welcome! We’re glad you’re here because we founded Richmondside, a free nonprofit news site, based on what Richmonders told us they are looking for in a local news and information source.

We’ve tried to keep what community members told us top-of-mind as we decided what to report on, designed the site, wrote stories and hired for our newsroom. (Meet our team.)

With that in mind, here’s your guide for how to get the most out of Richmondside.

How and where to read our stories

Visit the site: You can simply visit richmondside.org. We’ll be publishing stories daily on weekdays, so don’t forget to bookmark us and visit often.

On your phone: If you’re like most people these days, you read most of your news on your phone. We don’t have a mobile app, but you can easily add Richmondside to your phone’s home screen. Simply visit Richmondside.org using your phone’s web browser, then click the “share” button. (On an iPhone using Google Chrome this is the box with an up arrow at the top right of your screen. If you’re using Safari the share button is at the bottom. ) Scroll down through the share options and select “Add to Home Screen.” In Chrome on Android, click the three dots on the upper right. Find the option to “add to home screen.” Voila! Richmondside’s green icon now sits on your phone’s home screen.

Sign up for newsletters: We have two free newsletters you can sign up for to get headlines delivered to your inbox: The Richmondside Report, a daily roundup of top stories and upcoming activities is sent Monday through Friday and the Nosh newsletter, which focuses on the East Bay food scene and is sent on Tuesdays and Fridays. Subscribe to our newsletters.

Follow us on social: We also post story links on our social channels. Richmondside is on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp. (You can also follow me on Twitter @KHulacRichmond and reporter Joel Umanzor @jr_umanzor.)

How we organize our journalism

Our stories are currently organized into five categories: Latest News, City, Community, Schools, Events and Nosh.

City: This includes coverage about city government, local politics and general city business, including planning and economic development issues and public safety.

Schools: We cover the West Contra Costa Unified School District, Contra Costa College and a variety of youth issues and organizations.

Community: This is where you’ll find stories about interesting people, neighborhoods, local schools, businesses and nonprofits — really anything about the people, places and things that define Richmond life.

Events: Many Richmond residents told us they want to know more about what is going on in the city — places they can go to enjoy local culture or the outdoors and connect with other Richmonders. To help you plan your weekend, and the week ahead, we highlight select events every Thursday in our “What’s Up” column. We also include useful information there, such as an interesting public meeting agenda topic or a need-to-know item like a major street closure. Our searchable events calendar also lists local events, and anyone can post events there for free.

Nosh: Food and drink bring people in our community together and are also a way that Richmonders celebrate and express their cultures. Nosh is where you can stay current about which restaurants are opening and closing in Richmond and elsewhere and learn more about the people behind the food businesses that enrich our lives every day in the East Bay. We welcome tips about the local food scene too!

Kari Hulac is the Editor-in-Chief of Richmondside.
