Richmond Shoreline Alliance hosts meeting on United Heckathorn cleanup
The Richmond Shoreline Alliance, the Sierra Club San Francisco Bay Chapter and San Francisco Baykeeper are hosting a community meeting Saturday about the environmental cleanup at the United Heckathorn site. Attendees will hear about the progress and plans to continue remediating the contaminated site. The United Heckathorn Superfund site sits in a harbor inlet close to Richmond’s ferry terminal and became contaminated in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s after companies, including United Heckathorn Chemical, disposed of chemicals in the water.

Crews start five-week project cleaning up contaminated Marina Bay site
Cleanup crews will be working for several weeks on a contaminated 2.5-acre vacant site in Marina Bay, between Erica Way and Esplanade Drive, starting July 27. Workers will be on site weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The currently fenced-off site will get an asphalt cap and four groundwater monitoring wells, and the city plans to convert it to a parking lot. The lot was once part of the Richmond shipyards, and the soil was contaminated during its industrial use.

The Richmond Museum of History and Culture is hosting the second of three Art of Opportunity seminars on July 29, combining job readiness training with art therapy. Each session covers career counseling, resume tips, mock interviews, and financial literary training, all designed to build practical career skills while supporting participants’ emotional well-being. Learn how to administer Narcan for drug overdoses
The Contra Costa County MEDS Coalition is hosting a Narcan kit assembly event in Hercules on July 30, where participants help build Narcan safety kits for distribution in local communities. Attendees will also learn how to reverse an opioid overdose using Narcan and be given kits of their own.

Registration is open for fall classes at Richmond Art Center
The Richmond Art Center is accepting registrations for fall classes, some of which start soon and run through mid-November. The courses include painting, jewelry making, sculpture, metal fabrication, and pottery, and cost from $140 to $390 with morning, afternoon and evening options.
