Many Bay Trail users are unaware that they're passing just feet away from the Zeneca site, which is highly contaminated from decades of chemical dumping. The state department of toxic substances will give an update on the cleanup on April 9. Credit: Maurice Tierney for Richmondside

1 | House Rabbit Society seeking donations this Easter season

House Rabbit Society, a nonprofit organization that rescues rabbits and supports pet owners, is asking for financial assistance this Easter season to help stock its pantry in Richmond. The monthly free pantry, held on the first Saturday of every month, provides households with a 5-pound bag of rabbit food pellets, hay and 10 pounds of litter pellets. “During these challenging economic times, access to basic necessities can mean the difference between a rabbit staying in a loving home or entering the shelter system,” says Amber Tadena, House Rabbit Society’s executive director.

4 | State officials holding meeting on Zeneca site cleanup plan, April 9

Officials from the state Department of Toxic Substances Control are meeting with the community advisory group of the Richmond Shoreline Alliance to discuss cleanup plans for the contaminated Zeneca industrial site. The public is invited to join the meeting via Zoom to receive information and have questions answered.

The Zeneca site is an 86-acre parcel on Richmond’s southeast shoreline that was a dumping site for industrial hazardous waste for more than 100 years. Officials at the Richmond Shoreline Alliance say “substandard cleanup efforts have left dangerously high levels of toxic and cancer-causing chemicals and heavy metals in the soil and groundwater.” Plans were approved in 2020 for a 4,000-home development on the site, but that project is now on hold.
