A man was fatally shot in the Iron Triangle Thursday morning, marking Richmond’s first homicide of 2025, according to Richmond police. He was later identified as Claude Richard III. He was 43.

Initially, officers responded to a ShotSpotter notification, which alerts law enforcement to possible gunfire, around 11:56 p.m. on Wednesday in the area of 8th Street and Lincoln Avenue but did not find any evidence of a shooting, police said in a press release.

Hours later, officers were dispatched around 6:44 a.m. on Thursday to reports of an unresponsive man on the ground near 9th Street and Lincoln Avenue, about one block east of the initial ShotSpotter alert, police added.

First responders pronounced the man dead at the scene. He has yet to be identified by authorities.

Richmond homicide detectives ask anyone with information  to call the RPD Investigations Bureau at (510) 620-6616.
