Deadline for giving Rosie the Riveter a makeover is Tuesday

The deadline for a contest to give the iconic Rosie the Riveter model a new look is coming up.
The Rosie the Riveter Trust is sponsoring a contest for adults and children to design new ways to portray the famous icon that represents women who worked in the shipyards and other places during World War II.
The contest, called “Rosie Reimagined: Visions of the Future,” is seeking creative interpretations of the Rosie image past, present and future through painting, photography, textile, digital art, poetry and other mediums.
There are three age categories: Children (10 and under); youths (11 to 17); and adults (18 and up). Entries are due on Tue., July 15.
The selected works will be displayed in a virtual exhibit as part of the Rosie the Riveter park’s 25th anniversary celebration.
Learn about EPA Superfund site cleanup technologies

Federal officials later this month will hold the fourth in a series of online public meetings about the ongoing cleanup of a polluted site along the Richmond shoreline.
For 22 years, between 1944 and 1966, various chemical companies processed pesticides in the Lauritzen, Parr and Santa Fe channels of the Richmond Harbor. In 1990, the EPA designated Lauritzen Channel, the former site of United Heckathorn, as a Superfund site, opening it up to new sources of federal cleanup funding. While an estimated 3,300 cubic yards of contaminated soil was removed from the site, the water and its fish remain contaminated.
The new cleaning efforts, the first since 1990, will pay special attention to the effects of rising sea levels.
The July 29 session, set for at 6:30 p.m., will focus on assessing the cleanup technologies used at the United Heckathorn Company site.
