Richmond will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday to kick off a $12 million renovation of Boorman Park, according to a press release from Mayor Eduardo Martinez.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the park between 23rd and Maine streets in the Iron Triangle neighborhood is scheduled for Thur., Jan. 30 at 11:30 a.m.
The park will be upgraded to include a multi-use trail, skating area, athletic field, basketball court and children’s play areas.

“This investment will shape childhoods for generations to come,” said Rhea Elina Laughlin, executive director of Rising Juntos, a nonprofit that advocates for racial, economic and health equity in Contra Costa County. It’s partnering with the city on the project.
A 2019 Contra Costa County assessment identified Boorman Park as a high priority for improvements due to safety concerns and its location — an area with high poverty rates and a large youth population.
The park, which sits just north of Maine Avenue in south Richmond, is situated in a neighborhood of single-family homes and is bordered by railroad tracks and manufacturing businesses.
“These projects represent what we can accomplish together when we unite residents and key organizations to transform neighborhoods,” Laughlin added.
The project is funded through California’s Proposition 68 State Park Program and a Caltrans Clean California Local Grant. The park will also get restrooms, parking spaces, landscaping and safety features.
Martinez called the renovation “a clear example of the community’s vision coming to life” and pledged to pursue similar upgrades across the city.
