Bake Sum
05.05.26: Bake Sum has arrived in Alameda at the former Feel Good Bakery space inside Alameda Marketplace. Bake Sum, voted the East Bay’s best bakery in 2025 by Nosh readers, is known for Asian American-style pastries – a mix of Asian bakery buns and French-style pastries, with items that quickly sell out like passionfruit tarts, ube cookies, mochi muffins, and a croissant inspired by Spam musubi. The shop, which opened on Grand Avenue in Oakland about five years ago, is owned by Joyce Tang, who has a forthcoming cookbook co-authored with journalist Soleil Ho. Jamba Juice
06.02.26: The Jamba Juice in Alameda Landing was closed for several months, and is now back open. Jamba Juice, 2650 5th St., Alameda
MIX Bar
05.05.26: A new cocktail bar focusing on mixed drinks and live DJs soft opened in Alameda. The menu includes drinks like a pandan old fashioned and a Sonrisa bourbon-based drink with calamansi and egg white. MIX Bar is run by some of the same folks behind the popular Somar Bar in Uptown Oakland, which closed about three years ago after a long stint in the neighborhood. Berkeley restaurant openings
Dumpling Day
05.26.26: A new dumpling spot opened in Berkeley. The menu features pan fried mini dumplings and xiao long bao (soup dumplings). Beyond dumplings, the menu is extensive, including mala soups, smoked chicken, and noodle soups. Dumpling Day, 2115 Kittredge St., Berkeley
Dera Cafe
05.26.26: Dera Cafe has soft opened in Berkeley in the former location of Guerilla Cafe, which closed in December after 20 years of operation. Dera Cafe serves chai, coffee, pastries, and desserts. Dera Cafe, 1620 Shattuck Ave., Berkeley
DH Noodles and Grill
05.26.26: DH Noodles and Grill serves Chinese regional dishes such as Lanzhou handpulled noodles, “da pan ji” (big plate chicken), spicy cumin lamb, and a variety of other Northwestern Chinese classics. DH Noodles and Grill, 2475 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley
ChaHalo
06.02.26: A new milk tea spot just opened in Berkeley. ChaHalo is a chain from Xi’an, China, serving teas made from freshly steeped tea leaves (versus powder mixes). One of its signature drinks is the osmanthus oolong milk tea. ChaHalo, 2041 University Ave., Berkeley
El Trompudo
05.26.26: A new taco spot has opened in Berkeley near the Cal campus. El Trompudo specializes in Jalisco-style Mexican food from the owners of a restaurant in El Sobrante. Their Berkeley restaurant is housed in the former Joshu-ya, one of Berkeley’s first sushi restaurants that opened in 1978 (it closed in 2017). El Trompudo, 2441 Dwight Way, Berkeley
Hinodeya
05.26.26: A popular ramen chain has arrived in Berkeley. Hinodeya is known for their dashi broth ramen soups, including a creamy vegan ramen and their house ramen special with chashu. Hinodeya has several restaurants in San Francisco and one in Newark. Hinodey in Berkeley has soft opened and is holding its grand opening on Monday, June 1. Hinodeya, 2309 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley
Glom Thai
06.02.26: A new Thai spot has opened in Berkeley. Glom Thai recently soft opened with a menu of small plates, charcoal grilled dishes, whole fish, vegetarian dishes, and curries. Glom is in the former location of Sistory Thai. Glom Thai, 1233 San Pablo Ave., Berkeley
Gurkha Kitchen Express
06.02.26: A Nepali restaurant has opened in Berkeley, serving momos (dumplings), other Nepali dishes, and Indian cuisine. Gurkha has other locations in the Bay Area, including in Hayward, San Jose, and San Ramon. Gurkha Kitchen Express, 2493 Telegraph Ave., Berkeley
Hopkins Cafe

Narwal Urban Village
05.26.26: Reader Juliet tipped us off that a new Indian restaurant has opened in Berkeley. Narwal serves tandoori dishes, a variety of breads, and has a vegetarian menu in the former House of Curries restaurant space. Narwal Urban Village, 3136 Sacramento St., Berkeley
Sightglass

Dave & Buster’s
05.05.26: The arcade and restaurant chain opened in Oakland’s Jack London Square May 4. Think a large claw machine that holds up a human, darts, shuffleboard, and large-screen TVs for sports-watching, plus beer and bar food. Dave & Buster’s, 55 Harrison St., Oakland
Kathiew House of Oakland
05.05.26: A popular Cambodian beef noodle soup spot is back in operation after taking a pause for a few months. Kathiew House used to sell noodle soups and other Cambodian dishes from a home kitchen and is now set up outside at A&R Market in East Oakland. Kitsch Coffee

La Perla Tapatia Cafe
05.26.26: A new cafe and sandwich shop has opened near Brookdale Park in Oakland. La Perla Tapatia Café serves espresso drinks, matcha, breakfast items like crepe and avocado toast, salads, and sandwiches. La Perla Tapatia Café, 2603 B High St., Oakland
Neighborhood Sports Club
05.12.26: The new soccer club in Jack London neighborhood will hold its grand opening celebration on Saturday, May 16. The club includes a cafe in addition to a retail store and soccer field. Neighborhood Sports Club, 100 Second St., Oakland
Starline
05.05.26: What’s going on at the former Starline Social Club space? For a brief time, it was called Bad Decision, but owners told NOSH that after they took over last January, they have been reworking the concept. They recently partnered with food purveyor Sistas Wings to lead the kitchen is now renamed Starline. Sistas Wings’ menu includes not only wings, but oxtail, pork chops, lamb chops, and sides. Teni East Kitchen
05.05.26: The popular Burmese restaurant is now open in its new Piedmont Avenue location. Chef and owner Tiyo Shibabaw is originally from Ethiopia and worked as general manager at Burma Superstar before opening her own restaurant. Her dishes have a Cali-cuisine spin on Burmese dishes. Zeng’s Family Kitchen
05.12.26: A new kiosk inside Swan’s Market in Old Oakland has opened, taking over the space that formerly housed Huang Cheng Potsticker. Zeng’s Family Kitchen recently soft opened, debuting a lunch menu that includes mapo tofu, honey walnut shrimp, and kung pao chicken over rice. San Ramon restaurant opening
Meyhouse
05.05.26: A new Turkish restaurant and jazz venue opened the weekend of May 2 in San Ramon. The Meyhouse Restaurant Group opened this concept inside the City Center Bishop Ranch. Walnut Creek restaurant openings
Doppio Zero
05.26.26: A new modern Italian restaurant grand opens in Walnut Creek this Wednesday, May 27. The restaurant serves neapolitan style pizzas, pastas, and Southern Italian entrees. The opening, from 6-8:30pm, includes a ribbon cutting and free pizza slices and small plates. This is the Bay Area chain’s sixth location. Doppio Zero, 1522 N. Main Street, Walnut Creek
Kitava
05.12.26: The Bay area gluten free restaurant chain opened its doors in Walnut Creek last week. The restaurant sells build-your-own bowls and other dishes. Kitava describes itself as a clean restaurant using healthier ingredients, avoiding gluten, dairy, peanuts, and soy. The two other East Bay locations are in North Oakland and Albany. Mensho
05.26.26: Mensho ramen soft opened this week in Walnut Creek. The much-lauded ramen chain from Tokyo specializes in rich broths, tantan miens, and vegan ramen. An Oakland location opened in 2023 on Piedmont Avenue and there are two locations in San Francisco. Mensho, 1512 N. Main St., Walnut Creek
Marufuku Ramen
05.19.26: Marufuku Ramen opens in Walnut Creek on Wednesday, May 27. The restaurant serves Hakata-style ramen in a rich Tonkotsu broth. The menu also includes wagyu and yakitori dishes.
