As much as the East Bay dining scene has changed and evolved in the past decade, and especially since 2020, some things remain comfortingly consistent.

One of those is Chez Panisse. First opened in 1971, the restaurant that has served as of one of the anchors of Berkeley’s dining destination North Shattuck neighborhood for more than five decades, is still the place to celebrate in the East Bay.

Nosh readers voted Alice Waters’ spot the best restaurant for special occasions, besting the competition of younger businesses — Parche, Mago, Commis, Juanita & Maude and Burdell.

“A classic that still stands up,” wrote one voter, summarizing the majority of comments.

Chez Panisse has alumni running kitchens all over the Bay Area and the world, and, while inspiring countless restaurants and slow food-devotees, continues to set a high bar in Berkeley.
