Richmond police are investigating the city’s fifth homicide of 2025 after a man, later identified as Larry Russell, 50, was shot and killed late Tuesday night in the city’s Iron Triangle neighborhood.

According to police, officers responded to a ShotSpotter activation at about 11:23 p.m. near the intersection of Macdonald Avenue and Third Street near Nevin Park and found Russell suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

No arrests have been made.

The shooting occurred in Richmond’s downtown corridor, about a half mile from the Richmond BART station.

All of the killings happened in Richmond’s Iron Triangle neighborhood, according to police statistics. The person in Richmond’s fourth homicide was shot to death in November, but the District Attorney called it self defense and declined to file homicide charges.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Richmond police Detective Mariah Farr at 510-620-6622.

Correction: Richmond’s fourth homicide, though not charged by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office is still considered a homicide in the city’s statistics, according to police.
